Mechanism of herbal hypotensive medicines discovered
9.30.2019 A collaborative study by the Abbott Bioelectricity Lab and the Jepps lab in University of Copenhagen has been published today in PNAS. We show that ten commonly consumed plants with reported hypotensive properties all activate KCNQ5, a potassium channel expressed in the vasculature and brain. The results demonstrate an unexpected unifying mechanism for a diverse group of folk medicines traditionally used to lower blood pressure.
