3.9.2017 - Congratulations to recent graduate Dr. SooMin Lee, whose work in the Abbott lab discovering a new genetic basis for diabetes is published in FASEB J. Co-authors include recent graduates (Jasmine Baik and Dara Nguyen) and undergraduates (Vicky Nguyen), Steve Liu (Pharmacology Graduate Program) and Dr. Zhaoyang Hu (Abbott lab alumnus).

3.1.2017 - Dr. Abbott has been awarded  an R21 from NIH/NIDCD to investigate ion channel structure-function. 

2.7.2017 - An article  from the  Abbott lab, reporting for the first time that beta subunits functionally differentiate Kv4.3 splice variants, is published in Frontiers in Physiology.

9.22.2015 - Congratulations to Drs. Shawn Crump and Zhaoyang Hu, whose paper describing the first example of regulation of an ion channel beta subunit by testosterone has been published in FASEB Journal.
9.1.2015 - Congratulations to SooMin Lee, whose discovery of the first genetic link between an ion channel and atherosclerosis has been published as a Rapid Communication in the Journal of Molecular and Cellular Cardiology.

2.2.2017 - An article  from the  lab of alumnus Dr. Zhaoyang Hu in collaboration with the Abbott lab, demonstrating novel mechanisms to protect against myocardial ischemia/reperfusion injury, is published in Journal of Applied Physiology.

12.6.2016 - An article from the  Abbott lab describing function of newly discovered long isoforms of KCNE3 and KCNE4 is published in Scientific Reports.

11.1.2016 - A commentary from the  Abbott lab describing the new field of chansporters,  is published in Biochemical Journal.

6.16.2015 - Congratulations to Vanessa Van Lee and Victoria Nguyen, who have been appointed as 2015-2016 UROP Fellows for their work on K+ channels in the Abbott lab.
6.15.2015 - Congratulations to Vanessa Van Lee and Victoria Nguyen, who have each been appointed as 2015 SURP Fellows for their work on K+ channels in the Abbott lab.

10.25.2016 - An article  from the  lab of alumnus Dr. Zhaoyang Hu in collaboration with the Abbott lab, demonstrating novel mechanisms to protect against sudden cardiac death, is published in PLoS One.

10.7.2016 - An article from Dr. Thomas Jepps (University of Copenhagen) in collaboration with the Abbott lab, demonstrating a sex-specific role for KCNE4 in vascular reactivity, has been published in Journal of Vascular Research.

9.20.2016 - The Abbott lab has been awarded an R21 grant from NIH/NIDCD to utilize cutting edge microscopy techniques to understand potassium channel composition and subunit dynamics, in a collaboration with Dr. Michelle Digman. 

8.26.2016 - Congratulations to Dr. Daniel Neverisky, who successfully defended his Ph.D. thesis on August 26th.

6.14.2015 - Congratulations to Dara Nguyen, whose presentation of her work in the Abbott lab on cardiovascular disease has earned her the prestigious Dean's Award for Excellence in Research.
6.8.2015 - Dr. Abbott and collaborator, Dr. Michelle Digman, have been awarded a CORCL Multi-Investigator Research Grant to support their work on potassium channel subunit dynamics.
4.1.2015 - Dr. Abbott has been awarded an NIH/NIGMS R01 award to study ion channel-transporter interactions.

8.4.2016 - Gene has published a series of three review articles from the Abbott lab, describing KCNE2, KCNE1 & 3, and KCNE4 & 5. The articles are published in the Gene Wiki series and are in conjunction with updates to the Wikipedia pages for KCNE1, KCNE2, KCNE3, KCNE4 and KCNE5.

6.13.2016 - Congratulations to undergraduates Tony Nguyen and Caroline Cao for their appointment as funded UROP Fellows, Angele de Silva for her appointment as a funded SURP Fellow, and to Thien Nguyen and Araxi Zakarian for their appointments as both UROP and SURP funded Fellows. These talented 199 students will use their awards to discover novel roles for KCNE subunits in native potassium channels.  
 
5.21.2016 and 6.8.2016 - Double congratulations to Dr. SooMin Lee, who has been awarded the Henry Elliott Award,  given annually to one outstanding Pharmacology graduate student, and who successfully defended his Ph.D. thesis on June 8th. 
6.11.2016 - Congratulations to Brandon Nguyen, a former 199 undergraduate student in the Abbott lab, who has graduated with Honors in Chemistry at UCI.  

June 2016 - Congratulations to Victoria Nguyen, who has been awarded the prestigious Excellence in Research in Biological Sciences for her work on the KCNE2 potassium channel subunit.

5.14.2016 - (Left to right) Victoria Nguyen, Jasmine Baik and Vanessa Van Lee presented their work at the 23rd Annual UCI Undergraduate Research Symposium. Their three posters described research to examine the role of KCNE2 in aspects of metabolic syndrome, and also analysis of ion channel-transporter interactions.

April - June 2016 - Congratulations to the following current and former Abbott lab Bio-199 program undergraduate students who have been accepted to highly prestigious PharmD programs: Ann Lan and Vanessa Van Lee: USC; Timothy Do and Francesco Nguyen: UCSF.

1.22.2015 - Congratulations to Dara Nguyen, Timothy Do, and Ann Lan, who have each been appointed as UROP Fellows for the academic year 2014-2015. The Fellowships include financial support to help fund their research on potassium channels in the Abbott lab.
11.18.2014 - Congratulations to Dara Nguyen, who received an Honorable Mention for her E-SURP Fellow poster presentation at the Edwards Lifesciences Center for Advanced Cardiovascular Technology. The poster described Dara's work in the Abbott lab on diabetes.
9.30.2014 - Dr. Abbott has been awarded an NIH/NIDDK MPI R01 with collaborator Dr. Nancy Carrasco (Yale University) to study the sodium iodide symporter.

July 2014 - Congratulations to Daniel Neverisky, who has been awarded a two-year American Heart Association Fellowship (2014-2016) to fund his graduate studies in the Abbott lab on ion channel-transporter interactions.

2.18.2014 - Our research in the news: UC Irvine researchers have found a specific genetic flaw that is connected to sudden death due to heart arrhythmia – a leading cause of global mortality.
 

June 2013 - Congratulations to Dan Neverisky (third from right) who was one of the winners of a NIH-funded Travel Award at the 2013 FASEB SRC on Ion Channel Regulation in Nassau, Bahamas.

June 2013 - Several members of the Abbott lab attended the FASEB Science Research Conference on Ion Channel Regulation in Nassau, Bahamas, which was chaired by Drs. Geoff Abbott and Geoff Pitt; Bill Catterall (U. Washington) was the keynote speaker.  Marie Anand was timekeeper and also presented a poster; Dan Neverisky and SooMin Lee presented posters.

5.15.2016 - An article  from  the Abbott lab and the lab of alumnus Dr. Zhaoyang Hu is featured on the May 15, 2016 cover of Cardiovascular Research. It shows that Kcne2 deletion is paradoxically cardio-protective after an imposed infarction, and explains why.

5.11.2016 - The FASEB Journal publishes an article from the Abbott lab reporting discovery of new portions of KCNE3 and KCNE4 that are encoded by exon 1 of each gene, previously thought to be non-coding. The newly discovered portions alter how these subunits modulate some of their potassium channel partners.

4.21.2016 - Congratulations to Daniel Neverisky, whose review article on Ion Channel-Transporter Interactions was published in Critical Reviews in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology.

3.17.2016 - Congratulations to SooMin Lee and Dara Nguyen, whose discovery of the first genetic link between an ion channel and fatty liver has been published in Scientific Reports.
