Association between Alzheimer's disease and disrupted vitamin B1 transport
A collaborative project between the Abbott, Alachkar and Said labs, published in Neurobiology of Disease, reveals expression and activity of vitamin B1 (thiamin) transporters are decreased in Alzheimer's disease, at least partially due to exposure to inflammatory cytokines. Reciprocally, thiamin influences expression of genes linked to Alzheimer's disease. The results suggest a possible role for thiamin in the pathophysiology of Alzheimer's disease or its prevention.
